A high-quality gaff is as vital on a boat as lifejackets. Since so many pelagic fish have teeth or can be dangerous by virtue of their size, gaffing is much safer for the anglers than landing the fish by hand. Fish over 50lbs should be gaffed using a 3” or 4” hook. On some species such as sharks, large tuna and jumbo cobia, 4” is best.
